i media non sono estensioni dei sensi umani,
ma estensioni della Terra
(Jussi Parikka, A Geology of media, 2015)

We have been told that social media killed blogs, which killed newspapers, which had already been killed by radio, which in turn was killed by TV. The media world is full of killers, and yet newspapers, books, radio, vinyl and television are still with us. To talk about the technologies that mediate our relationship with the world, I chose a dying media, the newsletter, which is now back in fashion instead. We live within a vast, ever-changing media ecology. For those who study media, there has never been a better age: we used to study newspapers, radio and TV. Today we also study transoceanic cables that bring the Internet into our homes, Internet-connected refrigerators, food delivery platforms, and Tinder algorithms. Our idea of what media are has evolved a lot over time. Instead of studying what media say, or the effects media have on people, we now also study what people do with media, how they domesticate it within their daily lives. This newsletter was created first of all to continue the long-distance dialogue with my former students, but it is open to anyone interested in these issues. Here I write about the books I read, the articles I published, the research I do. I also report some calls for Phd or university jobs.

You will receive this newsletter from time to time, only when I have something “new” to say. It is a meditation exercise to keep us trained in thinking about the role of media in our lives. I will sit in silence, counting my breaths as I write about alliances between humans and algorithms; you, if you like, can do the same.
